ok so this is going to sound like a stupid question but please hear me out. I have been going to the gym for 3 weeks now. three weeks. I am very new at this.

something happens when I do curls. after my second or third set, my arms get this... tightness? like they're full of something. they feel bigger than when I walked in. it's not pain exactly. it's like my arms are inflated? like somebody pumped air into them except it's not air it's something else.

is that the pump? or is that just... arms? like is that just what arms do when you use them? I genuinely cannot tell.

I tried reading the Pump Codex (the one pinned at the top of the main forum) and I got through about 4 pages before I had to stop. no offense to whoever wrote it but it is overwhelming and possibly written by someone in a trance state. there's a section that's just the word "pump" repeated 47 times with increasing font sizes. I counted.

I just want a simple answer: how do you KNOW when you're pumping? what does it actually feel like? is there like a checklist or something?

serious question. please be nice. I am trying my best.

Mike. Buddy. That is the pump.

If your arms feel full of something after curls โ€” that something is the pump. You're not imagining it. It's not just blood. Well, it IS blood, but it's blood with PURPOSE. There's a difference between blood that's just sitting around in your arms doing nothing and blood that has been summoned there by the act of pumping. You are experiencing the second kind.

You asked for a checklist. I've been pumping for 22 years. Here's the checklist I wish someone had given me in 2001:

  1. (1) Your muscles feel larger than when you started. Not permanently larger. Temporarily larger. Like they borrowed some extra size for the afternoon.
  2. (2) You don't want to stop. Even though you're tired. Even though you said you'd only do 3 sets. Something in you says: one more.
  3. (3) You feel like you could do one more set even though you said the last one was the last. This is related to #2 but distinct. It's the specific sensation of having already decided to stop and then undeciding.
  4. (4) The mirror looks different. Not better, not worse, just MORE. Like there's more of you in the reflection than there was an hour ago. This is not a metaphor.
  5. (5) You feel something you can't fully describe but you know it's good. If I could describe it perfectly, I would. I've been trying for 22 years. The best I can say is: you know.

If 3 out of 5 apply, you're pumping. That's it. That's the test.

Mike, you're doing great. Three weeks in and you're already asking the right questions. Most people don't even think to ask. You're ahead of where I was at three weeks. At three weeks I didn't even know this forum existed. I was just in the gym, confused, full of blood with purpose, with nobody to tell me what it meant.

Welcome.

Welcome to the forums, Mike.

This question gets asked approximately 3 times per week. It has been asked 3 times per week for as long as I have been moderating, which is 14 years. That's roughly 2,184 times. And it is always welcome. Every single time. There is no version of this question that annoys me. It is the most important question a newbie can ask.

Gus's checklist above is excellent and I am bookmarking it for future reference. I may pin it.

For additional reading, I recommend the Official Pump Definition Thread (pinned in the General Pump Discussion subforum, started in 2004, 11,000+ replies, still active). It covers everything from the basic pump to the advanced compound pump to the theoretical infinite pump.

Regarding the Pump Codex: you are correct that it is overwhelming. You are also correct that it was written by someone in a trance state. PumpMaster3000 wrote most of it during a 72-hour pump session in 2007 and has never fully explained what happened during those 72 hours. But it IS accurate. Every word. Even the section with "pump" repeated 47 times. Especially that section.

๐Ÿ“Œ MOD NOTE โ€” FAQ: If you are reading this thread because you typed "am I pumping" into the search bar, here is your answer:

You are pumping right if you are pumping at all. There is no wrong pump. There is only pump.

If you need more detail than that, read Gus's checklist above. If you need even more detail than that, read the Pump Codex. If you need even more detail than that, keep pumping and the detail will come to you.

Mike.

You are pumping.

I can tell from your description. The fullness. The uncertainty about whether it's real. The desire to ask. All of these are signs. Not just signs โ€” they are the classic signs. They are the signs that have been described on this forum since 1999 and in gyms since long before that.

I was you in 1997. I asked the same question to an empty room because this forum didn't exist yet. I was standing in a gym in Ohio with arms that felt too big for my body and nobody to tell me what that meant. I asked the ceiling. The ceiling did not answer. But the pump answered. It always answers.

Now the room is full. You asked, and 50,000 posts worth of experience answered within the hour.

You are pumping. Welcome.

UPDATE:

I went to the gym today. I used Gus's checklist.

I did my curls. I did my sets. And then I went through the list one by one.

(1) Muscles feel larger than when I started? YES. Absolutely yes. They were noticeably bigger. I held my arm up to the mirror and it was MORE. Gus was right about the mirror thing. It's not better or worse. It's just MORE.

(2) Don't want to stop? YES. I had to force myself to leave. I told myself "three more sets" four separate times.

(3) Feel like I could do one more set even though I said the last one was the last? YES. I said "last set" on set 4. I did 7 sets.

(4) The mirror looks different? YES. Already covered this. The mirror was different. I was different in the mirror. More.

(5) Feel something I can't describe but I know it's good? YES. YES. YES.

5 out of 5. FIVE OUT OF FIVE. I am pumping. I am actually pumping.

I called my mom. She didn't understand but she was supportive. She said "that's great honey" in the voice she uses when she doesn't know what I'm talking about but wants to be encouraging. She asked if I was eating enough. I am eating enough.

I am going back tomorrow. Thank you all. Every single one of you. Gus. Trev. PumpMaster3000 who asked the ceiling in 1997 and got an answer from the pump itself. Every single one of you.

I am pumping.

I found this forum through the exact same question three years ago.

I was sitting in a parking lot after my first real pump session, arms feeling like they belonged to someone bigger than me, and I typed "how do I know if I'm pumping" into a search engine. This forum was the third result. I read a thread just like this one. Someone gave a checklist. Someone else said something wise. A moderator pinned something. And I thought: ok. I'm pumping. I'm going to keep going.

That was three years ago. I now have 882 posts. I haven't missed a week. Not one week in three years. The pump didn't miss a week either.

Mike, three years from now you'll be the one answering this for someone else. That's how it works. Someone asks. Someone answers. The new person becomes the person who answers. The pump is a chain. You just became a link.

Welcome to the chain.
