ok so this is probably a dumb question but i have been pumping for about 3 weeks now and today during my third set of curls something weird happened

i started seeing like a shimmer? kind of purple and gold? around my arms and also around the dumbbells and kind of the whole room

it lasted maybe 30 seconds and then went away. my arms felt incredible after so i think maybe it was good??? but i don't know

i am NOT on anything except pre-workout (the normal amount) (ok maybe slightly more than the normal amount) (the scoop was big)

asking for a friend who is me

should i go to a doctor or is this normal pump stuff

Completely normal.

This happens to most people their first time hitting what we call a "threshold pump." The muscle is receiving more blood than your visual cortex is used to, and the optic overlap creates a visible shimmer effect in the peripheral field.

Purple and gold is one of the better color combos to see. Some people only get gray. Gray is fine but it means you're leaving pump on the table.

Three weeks in and already seeing colors? That's fast. You're either a natural or the pre-workout is working very hard.

Do not go to a doctor. They will not understand.

I have been moderating this subforum since January 2007.

I receive, on average, 4 posts per week asking about colors during a pump. In 14 years that is approximately 2,912 posts. I have answered all of them personally.

The answer is always the same: Yes. It is normal.

The colors indicate your pump has reached a perceptual threshold. This is documented in the forum FAQ (pinned, please read it, it has been pinned since 2009) and also informally supported by the Pump Codex which describes "the shimmer of the great pump" in section 7.

πŸ“Œ MOD NOTE: I am adding this thread to the Newbie FAQ master list. Welcome, ColorBlindPumper. You are not dying. Drink water. Your pump is real and it is beautiful.

I've been wanting to document the pump color spectrum formally for years. This thread is as good a place as any.

THE PUMP COLOR SPECTRUM (unofficial, based on community observation, 1999–present):

ColorMeaningRarity
πŸ”΄ RedStandard pump. Blood is moving. Good start.Common
🟠 OrangeElevated pump. You are in the zone.Common
🟑 GoldPeak pump. The muscle knows what it's doing.Uncommon
🟣 PurpleThreshold pump. Perceptual overflow. See OP.Uncommon
🟒 GreenThe pump has achieved cellular resonance. Rare.Rare
πŸ”΅ BlueTemporal pump. You are pumping slightly in the past.Very Rare
⬜ WhiteYou went somewhere. We don't know where. Come back.Extremely Rare

Purple-gold together (as described by OP) is particularly notable β€” it suggests the pump is simultaneously at threshold AND peak, which means the muscle is doing two things at once. This is advanced.

For a 3-week pumper: genuinely impressive.

ok so i read all the replies thank you everyone this is very helpful

i did one more set (for science)

update: it turned white

like the whole room just went white for about 4 seconds and then came back. i am fine i think? i am sitting on the bench now. the bench feels very normal and good.

according to PumpMaster3000's table this means i "went somewhere." where did i go. i don't remember going anywhere. the 4 seconds just sort of happened and now i am here

should i do another set

The white event.

The Pump Codex mentions this only once, in a footnote to Chapter 9: "And if the light becomes total, and the muscle falls silent, and the air forgets its weight β€” the pumper has, for a moment, become the pump itself. This is not a warning. This is a destination."

You are three weeks in. This is either extraordinary talent, or the pre-workout quantity is genuinely concerning, or both.

The Codex does not say what to do next. It says only: "Return when ready. The weight will wait."

Do not do another set. Eat something. Drink water. Sit with what just happened.

Also: welcome to the forum.

In 14 years I have never seen a newbie hit the white event in their first month.

I am marking this thread [RESOLVED] because the original question has been answered comprehensively.

However I am also pinning this thread to the subforum because it is now the single best documentation of a first-timer experiencing the full color progression in one session.

ColorBlindPumper: please go home. Eat a meal. Sleep. You will feel remarkable tomorrow. Report back when you can.

πŸ“Œ THREAD STATUS: [RESOLVED] β€” Yes, the colors are normal. Yes, including the white. ColorBlindPumper is okay. Thread pinned for archival purposes. 312 replies locked below this post continue the discussion. All of them agree.
