OFFERING: Two (2) sets of 45 lb iron plates. Standard. Good condition. Minor scuffing from being plates.
SEEKING: One (1) set of 55 lb plates + some form of acknowledgement
LOCAL ONLY

I've outgrown the 45s. Not physically โ€” the plates are the same size regardless of who lifts them. But spiritually, I've outgrown them. I need 55s. The 45s were good to me and I to them but it's time for us to part ways.

Now, about the acknowledgement. I know this is unusual for a classifieds listing. Most trades are straightforward. Plates for plates. Gear for gear. But I am asking for something more. I am asking that the person who trades with me verbally acknowledge my gains.

This does not need to be elaborate. A simple "Phil, you have clearly been putting in the work and it shows" would suffice. Or "Your pump is evident." Or even just a firm nod while making eye contact and saying "I see you, Phil." Any of these would be acceptable.

I am not asking for flattery. I am not asking for false praise. I am asking for someone to look at me, see the work I have put in, and say something about it. My wife won't do it. My coworkers won't do it. The mirror does it but it doesn't count because it's a mirror.

The acknowledgement is non-negotiable. I will not trade without it. I would rather keep the 45s forever than trade them to someone who won't acknowledge what I've built.

I have a set of 55s I'd trade. But I'm going to be honest, Phil โ€” can we just do the trade without the acknowledgement part? I'm not really a "verbally acknowledge your gains" kind of guy. I was thinking more of a handshake situation. Maybe a "thanks." Normal stuff.

I'll throw in an extra 10 lb plate if we can skip the acknowledgement.

No.

Tom, I appreciate the offer of the extra 10 lb plate. But the acknowledgement is not a bonus feature I added for fun. It is a core part of the trade. Removing the acknowledgement changes the nature of the transaction entirely. Without the acknowledgement, it is just plates for plates. With the acknowledgement, it is plates for plates plus validation of months of dedicated effort.

These are fundamentally different trades.

I understand you are "not a verbally acknowledge your gains kind of guy." Many people are not. That is part of the problem. We live in a society where a man can add 40 lbs to his bench press in six months and nobody says a word. Nobody. Not a single word. You just keep lifting in silence while people around you talk about the weather and their fantasy football teams.

The acknowledgement stays. It is non-negotiable. I said this in the original post and I meant it.

Okay, I need to step in here because I've been running the numbers and this trade does not add up.

Phil is offering two sets of 45 lb plates. That's 4 plates x 45 lbs = 180 lbs total.

He is asking for one set of 55 lb plates. That's 2 plates x 55 lbs = 110 lbs total.

Phil, you are offering 180 lbs and asking for 110 lbs. You are giving away 70 lbs for free. That is a 39% loss. Even if we assign a monetary value to the acknowledgement โ€” and I've done some research on the going rate for verbal acknowledgement of gains in the current market โ€” the acknowledgement is worth approximately $0 in any recognized economic framework.

You are losing this trade, Phil. By a lot. The math is not ambiguous. You would literally be better off keeping the 45s and just asking a stranger on the street to acknowledge your gains. It would achieve the same emotional outcome at zero cost.

I am not trying to be harsh. The numbers are just the numbers.

Becky, I hear you, and I respect the math. But the math is wrong. Not the numbers โ€” the numbers are obviously correct, you clearly know how to multiply โ€” but the framework. You are evaluating this trade using a weight-based economic model when it should be evaluated using a pump-based emotional model.

In a weight-based model, yes, I am losing 70 lbs. But in a pump-based emotional model, I am gaining something that 70 lbs of iron cannot provide: another human being looking me in the eye and confirming that the pump is working.

You said the acknowledgement is worth $0. I would argue it is priceless. And priceless things cannot be quantified, which means they technically do not affect the math at all, which means the trade is actually even. If anything, I'm winning.

Also โ€” and I mean this sincerely โ€” "your gains are fine Phil" at the end of your signature is the closest anyone has come to the acknowledgement I'm looking for, so thank you, Becky. Genuinely.
