I have written a novel. It is a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy parody about pumping. It is complete. Here are the important bits.

📗 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Pump

Entry: EARTH

The entry for Earth in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Pump originally consisted of a single word: "Mostly pumped." This was later revised, after considerable lobbying by the inhabitants of Earth, to: "Mostly pumped. Has gyms."

THE PUMP AT THE END OF THE UNIVERSE
Chapter 1: The Answer

Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small, unregarded yellow gym.

Orbiting this gym at a distance of roughly ninety-two million miles is an utterly insignificant little blue-green planet whose ape-descended life forms are so amazingly primitive that they still think leg day is optional.

It was on this planet that Deep Pump, the second-greatest computer ever built, was asked the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything. It thought about this for seven and a half million years.

"The Answer," said Deep Pump, with infinite majesty and calm, "the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything..."

"Yes?!" said the assembled crowd.

"The Answer is..."

"YES?!"

"The pump."

There was a long silence.

"The pump?" said Phranko Prefect.

"The pump," confirmed Deep Pump. "I checked. It's the pump."

"That's... that's not even a number," said Phranko Prefect.

"You asked the Ultimate Question," said Deep Pump, with something that was either patience or contempt, both of which it had in unlimited quantities. "You did not specify the Ultimate Answer had to be a number. The pump is the pump. It is the answer. It has always been the answer. The fact that it took you seven and a half million years to ask and me seven and a half million years to confirm is, frankly, embarrassing for everyone involved."

📗 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Pump

Entry: THE PUMP

The pump is the answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything. It is also a physical sensation caused by blood flow to muscles during resistance exercise. Whether these two facts are related is a matter of some debate, though the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Pump notes in its entry under "DEBATE" that all debates are ultimately about the pump and therefore the point is moot.

Entry: DON'T PANIC

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Pump has the words DON'T PANIC — JUST PUMP inscribed in large, friendly letters on its cover. This is widely regarded as the best advice ever given by anyone about anything.

The full novel is posted across pages 1-8 of this thread. It is complete. I will not be writing a sequel because I said everything I needed to say, which is: the answer is the pump.

I re-read this every year on March 11 (the anniversary of the original post) and every year it gets funnier.

"You did not specify the Ultimate Answer had to be a number" is the line that broke me the first time and continues to break me every subsequent time. Deep Pump's sheer contempt for the people who built it is perfect.

Also: "Mostly pumped. Has gyms." as the revised Guide entry for Earth. This has been my email signature for 15 years. Nobody has ever asked me about it. I think they're afraid to.

The fact that this novel was posted in 2011 and remains the single funniest thing on this forum is both a compliment to HitchPump_Douglas and an indictment of the rest of us.

I created this account in 2011 specifically to argue that the answer should still be 42 and that you can do 42 reps of anything to honor the original.

This is my 42nd post. I have been posting once every four months for fifteen years to maintain this bit.

I do 42 reps of everything at the gym. Every exercise. Always 42. My gym partners think I am a deeply strange person. They are correct. But I have maintained this commitment for fifteen years and I think that counts for something.

However: I have come to accept that the answer might actually be the pump. When I do my 42nd rep and the pump is fully upon me, I feel something that feels like an answer. I cannot explain what the question is. But the pump feels like an answer to it.

The answer is the pump. I concede. Post 42 of 42. I'm done.

— FortyTwoPumper | 42 posts. Exactly 42. This was the last one. | The answer was always the pump. I just needed 42 posts to get there.

FortyTwoPumper finally conceding after 42 posts over 15 years is the most beautiful thing that has happened on this forum this week and I am adding it to the spreadsheet under "Character Arcs (Real People)."

Lore note: Deep Pump's conclusion that "the pump is the answer" predates the Ancient Lore page by several years. HitchPump_Douglas may have been the first person on this forum to explicitly state that the pump is the answer to everything. Everything that came after — the Lore, the Science page, the Dimension — can be traced back to this thread.

This is the ur-text. This is where it started.

The answer is the pump. It has always been the pump.

FortyTwoPumper: Your 42-post, 15-year commitment to the bit is the most Douglas Adams thing anyone has ever done in response to anything I've written. I am genuinely moved. Post 42 of 42. Perfect.

PumpLoreScholar: I did not set out to write the "ur-text" of anything. I set out to write a funny thing about pumping in the style of Douglas Adams because I was bored on a Tuesday in 2011. The fact that it apparently seeded an entire mythology is either the funniest or the most unsettling thing that has ever happened to me.

DontPanic_Pump: "Mostly pumped. Has gyms" as an email signature for 15 years with no one asking about it is a level of commitment I deeply respect.

I said I would not write a sequel. I am not writing a sequel. But I want to note for the record that if I were writing a sequel, it would be called So Long, and Thanks for All the Gains, and the dolphins would all be incredibly jacked.

Don't panic. Just pump.

— HitchPump_Douglas | "The answer is the pump. I checked." | Not writing a sequel. Definitely not. The dolphins are not jacked. Stop asking. | DON'T PANIC — JUST PUMP
